Join the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB) and the Potomac Valley Audubon Society for an easy, guided hike along the C&O Canal to learn the local flora, fauna and natural and social history of the Potomac River Basin. Our hike leader, Jim Cummins, retired Aquatic Biologist of ICPRB and current President of PVAS, will walk us through the fascinating human and biological history of the area.
The group will walk about 3 miles on easy terrain while Jim entertains with interesting history and stories of the area. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring along a water bottle, snacks and bug spray if needed.
Mr. Cummins will be meeting participants at the gate just off Canal Road that leads to the C&O Canal Towpath, upriver from the Antietam Creek Aqueduct (bridge).
Type ‘Antietam Creek Campground’ in Google Maps for directions and park along Canal Road at the furthermost ‘downriver end’ of the campground.
Otherwise, follow these directions:
From Shepherdstown, cross the bridge into Maryland and take your first right onto Canal Road. Follow Canal Road along the Potomac all the way until you see the Antietam Creek Campground on your right (*there is a slight jog in Canal Road where it intersects with Miller Sawmill Road – stay straight on Canal Road at this intersection). You will eventually see Antietam Campground on the right side of Canal Road. Continue driving until the end of the campground and park anywhere along Canal Road – then walk towards Antietam Creek (away from the campground). As you walk off of Canal Road toward the Towpath, there is a gate where Jim will be gathering the participants.
This event is free; however, we ask that you register through this Eventbrite link so that we can communicate any delays or cancellations due to the weather.
This hike is part of ICPRB’s Walk in the Woods Series produced by the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin in partnership with the Potomac Valley Audubon Society.
