Steamboat Run Community Singing Insect Walk
Friday, August 2, 2019 @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm
This walk is scheduled for the Steamboat Run Community and not available for the general public. Please see Wil Hershberger’s Singing Insect Walk scheduled for August 3 to register for the public Singing Insect Walk.
Steamboat Run Community, please join Wil Hershberger, local insect expert, for an evening insect walk at Steamboat Run’s Meadow. Listen and learn about the all the various insects we hear in the summer and early fall months.
The walking group will assemble at 8 pm at the east end of the meadow where the parking area is.
Registration is limited to 14 participants. Please register via the link provided by Laurel Parker.
Wil Hershberger will lead an exploration throughout the meadow. Insects likely to be encountered include tree crickets, several species of meadow katydids, one or two species of round-winged katydids, northern true katydids, oblong-wing katydids, and perhaps some bush katydids.
Those who wish to participate should bring a flashlight and be prepared (if you choose) to walk through high grass and weeds. Tucking pants legs into socks and spraying them with a DEET-based insect repellent is recommended.
The walk will not take place if it is raining.
Mr. Hershberger has been photographing and recording the natural world for more than a decade and his work has been published in magazines, calendars, and books. He is coauthor of “The Songs of Insects”, a book and audio CD published by Houghton-Mifflin Company. He is also the instructor of our very popular Birding 101 class.
