Join USDA-APHIS Pest Technician Dana Burton for a volunteer workday at Yankauer Nature Preserve to manage Spotted Lanternfly populations. She will teach us the techniques and tools of her trade. Then we will head out on the preserve armed with Golden Oil (soybean oil) to attack Spotted Lanternfly egg masses.
About Dana: Dana was born and raised in Maryland, and went to the University of MD where she received a degree in Natural Resource Management. She and her husband moved to Martinsburg soon after graduating college. Here, she spent the next 20 years raising her 5 children and watching lots of soccer. She became a realtor because of the flexible nature of the job and fell in love with helping people buy/sell their homes. Although she loved it, she started having the desire to do something related to her degree. This was about the same time that a small population of Spotted Lanternfly was discovered in Winchester, VA. She applied for a job with VA Dept of Agriculture as a Spotted Lanternfly surveyor and was hired in 2018. When the Lanternfly hopped the border into Bunker Hill,WV she had the opportunity to work for the USDA on their Spotted Lanternfly Program. She has been there the past 4 years. She considers herself fortunate to be able to do a job she enjoys. She loves getting to be outside most days, I making a difference in our environment, and getting to work with people in the community that want to make a difference too.
