Presentation Description – Many of our native pollinators are under the threat of extinction. There are a number of drivers of pollinator decline, including invasive plant species, use of pesticides and herbicides, regional declines in air and water quality, a changing climate, and habitat loss. We can help to reduce the threat to our native insects and birds with the choices we make starting in our own backyard. We do not have to choose between creating inviting spaces for pollinators versus people. With a bit of planning, beautiful gardens can easily accommodate the needs of both. It’s time to rethink our urban and suburban garden design to create space for all.
About the Presenter – Peggy Bowers turned her love of plants and nature into a rewarding career in the field of horticulture. Peggy had the rare opportunity to manage and work in several well-known public gardens and estates including Dumbarton Oaks, The American Horticultural Society River Farm and the George Washington Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens. In 2016, it was time for a change from a career-centric urban lifestyle and fulfill the desire to have a bit more land. In the quest for a perfect retirement home, Peggy and her husband David fell in love with Shepherdstown. Having found the perfect 46-acre property they built and opened Sundogs Bed and Breakfast in October 2018. The past four years Peggy and David have been dedicated to restoring their woodlands and
meadows and creating beautiful pollinator-friendly gardens. Peggy’s passion for pollinators can be seen not only at Sundogs but also at the New Shepherdstown Public Library where she is the lead designer of a community effort to create habitat gardens. The goal is to promote life spaces for the native insects and birds, and to teach and inspire others to create their own much-needed pollinator habits in their own backyards.
