The Pages and Pathways Book Group meets each season to discuss a book related to ecology, natural history, conservation, or other nature-related subject. The group typically begins the discussion over a meal, then heads out into nature to explore, walk, and talk!
This spring’s book is the US Fish and Wildlife publication Conservation History: Women in Conservation. There are 13 copies of the magazine (courtesy of Ellen Murphy) at the Case Nature Center for you to borrow and read. This publication can also be accessed online: https://www.fws.gov/sites/default/files/documents/2020-Conservation-History-journal.pdf. Be sure to read this before the event so you have ideas to share and discuss with other group members!
On the day of the event, the plan is to meet at the Martinsburg Diner at 10/10:30 am for breakfast and then carpool to Fort Frederick for the hike. We will want to leave the diner around noon to arrive at Fort Frederick between 12:30 and 12:45 pm to hike the Plantation Trail. Kendra Bree, Maryland State Park Ranger, will lead our guided trail walk at 1:00 pm. The trees along this trail were all planted by some awesome woman conservationists at the turn of the century! This is a relatively easy 1-mile trail through a 100-year-old tree plantation of many tree species in Fort Frederick, Maryland. Afterward, we can walk to the Potomac River or visit the old Fort.
We will walk the trail in a drizzle but will cancel the event in a downpour.
