Join trip leader Beth Poole for the FIRST of a new bird walk series: Monthly Mystery Bird Walks. The location of the bird walk will change from month to month – the “mystery”!
February’s bird walk will be at Fort Frederick State Park along the C&O Canal and Big Pool (Map)- just in time to view the duck migration! Fort Frederick State Park offers a Revolutionary-era restored park and a walk along the C&O Canal. Big Pool was built as a place for the boats to turn around. For birding, the site has multiple habitats: fields, woods, water. There is an active beaver family on one of the ponds. The opportunity to see a variety of birds is always promising. The hope at this time of year is to see many different kinds of ducks that are migrating north.
The staff at Fort Frederick State Park have graciously offered to open the park early for attendees of this bird walk. Learn more about the park here. This walk will take place at a slow pace as the group quietly observes the birds together.
Drivers should plan to park either on both sides of the C&O Canal Bridge (slightly north of the C&O Towpath) or at the comfort station parking lot across from the Fort. Please note that Fort Frederick State Park has a day-use admission fee of $3/vehicle for Maryland residents and $5/vehicle for out-of-state residents. Click here for more information, including information about eligibility for fee waivers.
