Please does warmly for this event as the winds on top of the Monument can be cold.
Join Steve Hartman on a hawk watch at Maryland’s Washington Monument State Park on South Mountain on Wednesday, November 13, 2019.
Meet at the upper parking lot of the State Park at 12:45 pm. The watch will start at 1:00 and go until about 3:00, however participants are welcome to stay longer if they wish.
This trip should offer good opportunities to view these magnificent birds in large numbers during their annual fall migration.
This event is during the period of the annual fall hawk migration, and the Washington Monument park offers an excellent vantage point to view these magnificent birds as they wend their way south for the winter.
Children are welcome, however must be accompanied by an adult.
The park requests a $2 donation from Maryland residents and a $4 donation from out of state visitors. If you have a park pass or are a veteran, the donation request is waived.
Participants should wear sturdy footwear, dress appropriately for the prevailing weather conditions and bring along drinking water and insect repellent. Please bring along binoculars if you have them.
Hawk-watching is very weather sensitive because these birds do not fly in rain or snow. In addition, if the wind is coming from the south, the event will be canceled. If it is certain that weather will force cancellation, those who have registered will be notified of that cancellation by email no later than 9:00 p.m. the evening before. If the event is canceled, it will also be announced on the top of this posting.
