Wednesday, October 23, 2019 @ 12:45 pm - 3:00 pm
PVAS Trip Leader: Steve Hartman
This event is free and open to the public, however registration is strongly encouraged. Please register below.
Join Steve Hartman on a hawk watch at Maryland’s Washington Monument State Park on South Mountain on Wednesday, October 23, 2019.
Meet at the upper parking lot of the State Park at 12:45 pm. The watch will start at 1:00 and go to about 3:00, however participants are welcome to stay longer if they wish.
This trip should offer good opportunities to view these magnificent birds in large numbers during their annual fall migration.
This event is during the period of the annual fall hawk migration, and the Washington Monument park offers an excellent vantage point to view these magnificent birds as they wend their way south for the winter.
Children are welcome, however must be accompanied by an adult.
The park requests a $2 donation for MD residents or a $4 donation for out of state visitors. If you have a park pass or are a veteran, these donations are waived.
Participants should wear sturdy footwear, dress appropriately for the prevailing weather conditions and bring along drinking water and insect repellent. Please bring along binoculars if you have them.
Hawk-watching is very weather sensitive because these birds do not fly in rain or snow. In addition, if the wind is coming from the south, the event will be canceled. If it is certain that weather will force cancellation, those who have registered will be notified of that cancellation by email no later than 9:00 p.m. the evening before. If the event is canceled, it will also be announced on the top of this posting.
