Welcoming Autumn with Nature Journaling at Eidolon!
For a special outing, we’ll be meeting at Eidolon Preserve in Morgan County. Eidolon, named after the phantom women of Greek mythology created by Zeus from mist and light, is an enchanting preserve straddling Purslane Mountain, including multiple fresh springs, walls of an old stone house, and many interesting plants, birds, trees, and other bits of ecology. If you have some time, visit the webpage on Eidolon to peruse the field notes of Marguerite Zapoleon. A special addition to the morning is that Marguerite’s original field notes will be at Eidolon the morning of the gathering. You can familiarize yourself with what Marguerite saw many years ago, as well as enjoy the fruits of another field journalist.
Plan to meet at the parking lot, then hike in to the Stone House ruins. We’ll use the Stone House for a base, gathering for a short nature journal introduction, walk the trails independently to observe and ponder, and eventually return to the Stone House to add details to our work, and share techniques and exercises to inspire our nature journal habits.
Whether you’ve been keeping journals for years, or a budding beginner, we welcome you to come out and put pencil to paper in the company of other enthusiasts.
- Bring your journal and any supplies you prefer.
- Dress for the weather, bring bug spray and water, and wear comfortable walking shoes.
- Bring binoculare and/or loupe for observation.
- Bring your own chair for use out in the preserve, if you would like one.
Please contact Krista Hawley at adultprograms@potomacaudubon.org or 681-252-1387 with any questions you may have.
