Come join us at beautiful, Eidolon Nature Preserve for an open house and ice cream social. We will gather in the big parking lot before taking a leisurely walk up to the stone house. Along the way, we will talk about the cultural and natural history of Eidolon and highlight the things that make the mountain magical. Upon reaching the house, we will serve chocolate ice cream with chocolate sauce, just like Mrs. Zapoleon would do!
Schedule:
3:00-4:00 – Meet and greet in the big parking lot
4:00-5:00 – Interpretive walk to the stone house
5:00-6:00 – ICE CREAM!
Important Information:
Please bring a chair and bug spray. The walk will be approximately 1/4 mile in length with places of steep incline and unpaved footing. Sturdy footwear is recommended. Cell phone reception is poor on the mountain. You may want to have printed directions, rather than rely on GPS. Look for the yellow Audubon sign and the sea foam green gate!
Please note that since we are providing ice cream, it is especially important to register so that we know how much to provide and if you have any dietary restrictions!
About our Host: Katelyn (KC) Walters, a Shepherdstown native, is our Associate Director of Conservation and Operations. KC is a Shepherd alumna, and holds a M.S. in Biology, with a focus in forest ecology, from James Madison University. Her master’s thesis evaluated the long-term effectiveness of treating hemlock trees for hemlock woolly adelgid infestation in Shenandoah National Park. During her college education, she interned with The Conservation Fund: Freshwater Institute and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. After graduation, she worked with the US Fish and Wildlife Service in southeastern Louisiana where she served as a forestry technician and became a certified Wildland Firefighter. KC then returned home to Shepherdstown and worked with Sustainable Solutions LLC as the Lead Natural Resources and GIS Technician. She joined the PVAS Team in April 2018 as the Land and Conservation Manager. Just shy of five years later, in January 2023, KC was promoted to the Associate Director position she holds today. KC enjoys riding horses, working with her dog, Paisley, on agility training, and stewarding the natural resources on her own property.
