Community science bird count data is instrumental in ecological and conservation research. Knowing where birds live and how abundant they are is vital to protecting a species. Even more important is understanding how these parameters may be changing over time as changes in bird habitat and abundance can be one of the first indicators of the occurrence of an even greater ecological change. We encourage all of our members and friends to be community scientists and help collect this invaluable data!

Each winter, between December 14 and January 5, PVAS volunteers organize two Christmas Bird Counts: the Inwood circle and the Charles Town circle. Volunteers count as many birds as they can within the designated area, and the data is compiled nationally to provide National Audubon and other organizations a snapshot of bird populations across the country. The data helps assess the health of bird populations and guides conservation initiatives. Click here to learn more about the PVAS Christmas Bird Counts.

Additional Community Science Opportunities
C&O Canal Bird Count – For 20 years, birds along the entire 185 miles of the C&O Canal have been counted each January. This survey is designed to provide a snapshot count of birds present on the C&O Canal. Please check our Events Calendar for information and registration.
The Great Backyard Bird Count – An annual four-day event in mid-February that engages bird watchers of all ages and expertise levels in counting birds. The event helps to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. It takes as little as 15 minutes on one day, or you can count for as long as you like each day of the event. It’s free, fun, and easy and it helps the birds!
Project FeederWatch – Anyone with an interest in birds and nature is invited to help us all learn more about our favorite birds and to become a community scientist. Project FeederWatch extends from November – April.
Celebrate Urban Birds – Get involved with birds and community activities in urban and suburban areas.
NestWatch – Find and monitor bird nests.
