    Plan to join us on Saturday, April 30 for the Potomac Valley Master Naturalist 2017 Annual Spring Gathering at Cacapon Resort State Park located in Morgan County.  This year the theme will be An Aldo Leopold Spring.

    We invite all Master Naturalists and their families to attend this fun filled day at Cacapon State Park.

    SCHEDULE (join us when you can):

    8:30 Bird Walk lead by Lynne Wiseman - meet in front of Nature Center

    10:00 Leopold Bench Building lead by Paul Breitenbach

    **For volunteer hours: help prepare the area behind the Nature Center for a native plant garden. Mostly moving rocks and raking. Wear old clothes and bring gloves if participating. 

    10:30 Dutch Oven Cooking lead by Clark Dixon

    12:00 Covered Dish Lunch - bring a dish - Tanner Haid to discuss Urban Forestry

    1:00 Creating a Butterfly Habitat - Help a Monarch lead by Becki Jones and Louise Finch

    2:00 Readings from Aldo Leopold's "A Sand County Almanac". Copies for sale or bring your own copy. 

    3:00 Hike - Features of Cacapon State Park - lead by Clark Dixon

    *If you are interested in building a Leopold bench please register for this event (registration needed only if you plan to build a bench - the first 5 people will be able to make the bench - others will be able to watch and step by step instructions will be shared with anyone interested). More information to follow regarding this event. Further instructions about payment for a pre-purchased kit will follow in an email. Assistance will be provided to assemble the benches.  Materials will be precut and cost $24.75

    Location:  Cool Spring Preserve is found at 1469 Lloyd Rd, Charles Town, WV. The entrance is well marked and ample parking is available.

    Join us for a day of maintenance at Cool Spring Preserve! Learn how to identify spring wildflowers and their non-native weedy competitors. Learn how to best remove these undesirable weeds to protect and preserve native species. We'll work together to accomplish invasive species removal in preparation for Spring.  Gather among friends for some hot coffee, cocoa, tea and cookies while we complete some outdoor maintenance work at Cool Spring Preserve.

    Invasive species removal is necessary to promote high quality native habitat at Cool Spring Preserve.  Your help is appreciated as every pair of hands helps make a difference! 

    All necessary training, tools, gloves will be provided. Light refreshments will also be available. Cool Spring Preserve has indoor bathrooms.

    We will be learning about invasive plants that are commonly seen in the spring, how to identify them, how they impact our native habitats and what techniques best control them. Informational handouts will be supplied, and then we will hit the trails in guided groups and get to work removing invasive plants.
