What: Inspired by Nature - Natural History Workshop: Nature Sketching

Where: Cool Spring Preserve, 1469 Lloyd Road, Charles Town

    When: Saturday, September 23, 2017

    Time: 8:30 - 10:30 AM

Cost: $10 for PVAS Members, $15 for general public

    PVAS Workshop Leader: Susan Brookreson

Join local artist Susan Brookreson for a Nature Sketching Workshop at Cool Spring Preserve.

Susan will focus on teaching drawing techniques that quickly capture as much information about the subject being observed in nature as possible; information not always present or obvious in a photo. This type of drawing is useful in the field when you want to come back with enough information to correctly identify the fern, flower, insect, etc. you have observed.  Most importantly, this type of drawing can help you learn to see in more detail the beauty and complexity in nature.

This workshop is aimed at those with little or no drawing experience although all levels are welcome.
Please bring along pencils and a small portable sketchpad.

Weather permitting, the class will do some drawing outside so please dress accordingly, bring along drinking water and insect repellent.

Registration for this workshop is required.

Please contact Krista Hawley at adultprograms@potomacaudubon.org
or 703-303-1026 with any questions you may have.

The PVMN Annual Meeting, Potluck Lunch and Silent Auction is Saturday, October 28 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Please note this year the Annual Meeting will be held at the Hospice of the Panhandle's Education Center (not the Orchard House). Directions are provided below.

The purpose of the gathering is to briefly conduct PVMN business, honor our new graduates, and recognize Master Naturalists who have achieved 5-years of active membership as well as socialize with others and, of course, eat.

Bring a dish to share as well as your own plate, cup, napkin and silverware. (We will have extras in case you forget.) Coffee and lemonade will be provided.

In addition, bring something for the Silent Auction! The proceeds from this annual auction provide scholarships to next year’s MN class. Ideas for things to contribute are…just about anything from t-shirts, books, food, field guides, crafts, bird items, and other fun stuff! Most items in the auction are in new or like-new condition. Last year we made over $600, which kept the class fee lower for several of this year’s class. We’re looking to make even more this year! And bring your checkbook so you can bid often and high!!

We also have a book table where used books are available for just $1-$2. Some folks use that table to pass on natural history books/field guides that might be of interest to other MN’s and pick something new at the same time.

The PVMN Coordinating Committee is seeking volunteers to help with the planning and execution of the Chapter's yearly instructional programming and all of its day-to-day operations...if you have been thinking of joining the Committee, we will have more information available at this meeting!

We look forward to seeing our fellow Master Naturalists there!

    Directions:

Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430

GPS location is Food Lion, 50 Coast Guard Drive, Kearneysville (Hospice is directly across the street from Food Lion)

    www.hospiceotp.org

From WV Route 9, take the Short Road exit. If traveling east, take a left off the exit. If traveling west, take a right off the exit. Follow to the stop light at Sheetz.  Turn right. Take the next left across from Food Lion onto Hospice Lane. Follow the road back.

The office will be on your left (the inpatient facility will be on your right). The door to enter for the Annual Meeting is to the right of the main office door. We will have a yellow Audubon sign at the door.
