JOIN THE FOURTH ANNUAL BUTTERFLY COUNT AT

    ANTIETAM BATTLEFIELD

The Monarch Alliance, a program of the Potomac Valley Audubon Society, will sponsor the fourth Annual Butterfly Count along the Final Attack Trail on the Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg, MD on Saturday, July 28th.

The count is being cosponsored by the Washington County Bird Club.

This event is free and open to anyone with an interest, regardless of his or her butterfly expertise. This will be a perfect family activity, and children, accompanied by adults, are encouraged to attend. Also, learn about the monarch migration.

    Registration is strongly encouraged.

As butterflies do not fly in the rain and heavy overcast can keep them down, participants should check the PVAS website for postponements if bad weather is forecast.  If the count is postponed, a notice will be placed on the website by 9 p.m. on the day before the count.

If the count is postponed, we will try to reschedule.

The Final Attack Trail is in the area where the Union Army made its final advance to drive the Confederate Army from Maryland on September 17, 1862, only to be turned back by A.P. Hill’s final Confederate counterattack.

It is also the location of the Antietam National Battlefield's extensive work in the restoration and preservation of native grasslands in the Otto Farm Fields in the southwest corner of the battlefield. Sandy Sagalkin, working with Battlefield staff, has assisted the Battlefield in surveying the grassland birds and butterflies in the area during the spring and summer the last several years

Participants should plan to meet count leaders at the Burnside Bridge at 10 a.m. Sandy Sagalkin will be the co-leader and will help identify bird life during the count.

To get to the Burnside Bridge parking area from Sharpsburg, head northeast towards Boonsboro. Take the first right turn after leaving Sharpsburg onto Rodman Avenue, which takes you into the battlefield. Turn left at the “T” and follow the road up the hill to the parking area.

The count will last about 2 hours, and cover mostly level terrain. The trail is about 2 miles in length.

Participants should wear sturdy footwear, dress appropriately for the prevailing weather conditions, and bring along water, a broad-brimmed hat, and insect repellent. PVAS has a limited supply of loaner binoculars for those who do not have their own.

For more information, contact Mr. Dave Kaplan at or janandavek@verizon.net or Mr. Sagalkin at monsansagalkin@myactv.net or 240-291-6465. Sandy is the Co-Director of The Monarch Alliance and Dave is the former Deputy President of The Monarch Alliance.

    Cost: Free

    Trip Leader: Wil Hershberger

    PMVN ReCert Eligible

Join Wil Hershberger, local insect expert, for an evening insect walk at Cool Spring Preserve. Listen and learn about the all the various insects we hear in the summer and early fall months.

Mr. Hershberger is coauthor of "The Songs of Insects", a book and audio CD published by Houghton-Mifflin Company. He is also the instructor of our very popular Birding 101 class.

This walk is a family-oriented event that is especially popular with children, but anyone with an interest is welcome to participate.

There is no fee (donations accepted) but space is limited and preregistration is required.

The walking group will assemble at 7:30 p.m. at the parking lot of Cool Spring Preserve.

From the parking lot, Wil Hershberger will lead an exploration along the CSP trails passing through meadow, woodland and marsh. Insects likely to be encountered include tree crickets, several species of meadow katydids, one or two species of round-winged katydids, northern true katydids, oblong-wing katydids, and perhaps some bush katydids.  Last year, this very walk found the first documented occurrence of Long-spurred Meadow Katydid in Jefferson Co., WV. Hopefully, we will see them again, and who knows what else may be found.

Those who wish to participate should bring a flashlight and be prepared (if you choose) to walk through high grass, weeds and marsh. Tucking pants legs into socks and spraying them with a DEET-based insect repellent is recommended.

The walk will not take place if it is raining.

Hershberger, who lives in Hedgesville, is one of the area's leading naturalists.

He has been photographing and recording the natural world for more than a decade and his work has been published in magazines, calendars, and books.

His recordings of birds, frogs and insects are archived at the Macaulay Library of Natural Sounds at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology.

His website can be found at natureimagesandsounds.com

Interested in Citizen Science and butterflies? This is the perfect opportunity for you!

Join Joanne on Saturday, August 25 as she takes you through her step by step process of Citizen Science Butterfly Research both in the classroom and in the field.

Joanne's presentation will cover how the citizen science project of “Butterflies in Season” went from just identifying the butterflies at Lauritzen Gardens to a project that involves many different elements such as: How many total butterflies and species there are in the gardens, how many butterflies and species are in each garden, what plants the butterflies are nectaring on, when are the butterflies at their peak, how weather affects the number of butterflies, and how the numbers of each species compares from year to year.

In the classroom Joanne will go over the objectives, how the project has evolved, some of the results, surprises, types of spreadsheets, field guides, as well as how and when to butterfly.

Joanne will then take to the field to provide visuals and hands-on learning about her Citizen Science project and guidelines on how to implement your own.

Joanne Langabee is a Master Naturalist and a Master Gardener. Since retiring in 2004, she has volunteered at Fontenelle Forest, Lauritzen Garden and for the city of Bellevue maintaining flower beds in the city parks. She is also on the Tree Board for Bellevue.  In 2007 – 2011 she tested EarthKind roses for Texas A & M.  Joanne started the “Butterflies in Season” project in 2015.

What: Introduction to Naturalist Field Journals

Where: Cool Spring Preserve, 1469 Lloyd Road, Charles Town

    When: Saturday, September 22, 2018

    Time: 9 am -  12 pm

Cost: $15 for PVAS Members, $20 for general public

    Instructor: Carolyn Duckworth

    PVMN Re-Cert Eligible

Celebrate the Autumn Equinox with Carolyn's morning workshop; Introduction to Naturalist Field Journals.

Learn techniques to begin or diversify your field journaling, and follow in the footsteps of Joseph Grinnell and John Muir. Field journals have long been used by naturalists to record regular observations of the natural world. Such detailed information, which may include species counts, illustrations, weather patterns, and notable seasonal changes are used by naturalists for pleasure, scientific and historic inquiry. Field journals encourage keen observations to gain insight and record lasting impressions of the natural world.

This event will be led by Carolyn Duckworth, a professional writer for the National Park Service and a trained artist. Carolyn has spent decades studying and perfecting the practice of keeping naturalist field journals.

This class will begin with a brief indoor session, then will move outdoors (weather permitting). Cool Spring’s easy trails and gathering spaces are ideal for working on your own field journal.

Bring a small (approximately 5 x 7") sketchbook or notebook, preferably with no lines, a pencil (#2) and a pen of your choice. PVAS will have some extra supplies available for use.

Dress for the weather, wear comfortable walking shoes and bring along some drinking water.

Carolyn is offering an afternoon sequel to her morning workshop. If you are planning on attending the afternoon session, please bring along a packed lunch. If the weather permits, there are ample places to enjoy your picnic lunch on the preserve. There is a refrigerator and microwave available for those that would like to store or heat their lunch.

Everyone is welcome to attend this workshop, regardless of their journaling skills. Children may attend when accompanied by an adult and registration is required.

Please contact Krista Hawley at adultprograms@potomacaudubon.org or 703-303-1026 with any questions you may have.

Embrace Autumn's arrival with Carolyn's afternoon workshop; In-depth Field Journaling.

Deepen your field journal practice with two classic drawing techniques, simple visual cues, and combining the visual with words. The drawing techniques help you relax your mind so you can record observations more accurately. Results can be hilarious, yet they reveal details you don’t ordinarily see. Use visual prompts to decipher animals, plants, and landscapes. Experiment with organizing a field journal page before, during, and after field observations.
