    When: Saturday, September 23, 2017

    Time: 8:30 - 10:30 AM

Cost: $10 for PVAS Members, $15 for general public

    PVAS Workshop Leader: Susan Brookreson

    PVMN Re-Cert Eligible

Join local artist Susan Brookreson for a Nature Sketching Workshop at Cool Spring Preserve.

Susan will focus on teaching drawing techniques that quickly capture as much information about the subject being observed in nature as possible; information not always present or obvious in a photo. This type of drawing is useful in the field when you want to come back with enough information to correctly identify the fern, flower, insect, etc. you have observed.  Most importantly, this type of drawing can help you learn to see in more detail the beauty and complexity in nature.

This workshop is aimed at those with little or no drawing experience although all levels are welcome.
Please bring along pencils and a small portable sketchpad.

Weather permitting, the class will do some drawing outside so please dress accordingly, bring along drinking water and insect repellent.

Registration for this workshop is required.

Please contact Krista Hawley at adultprograms@potomacaudubon.org
or 703-303-1026 with any questions you may have.

Join PVAS for an Open House to celebrate our one-year anniversary at Cool Spring Preserve!

It’s been an amazing year of getting our feet wet (literally) in Bullskin Run and settling into PVAS’s new home in the nature center. Lots of feet, large and small, have been exploring the forests, fields, stream and trails of PVAS’s newest nature preserve over the last year.

Come celebrate with us! We’ll have activities for young and not-so-young alike. Learn how to use binoculars; toast a marshmallow over a fire; make a fairy house; go on a scavenger hunt; or take a quiet walk along the Bullskin and the beautiful marsh beside it.  Refreshments will be provided, and the event is free and open to anyone.

If you’ve not see the property yet, this is a great opportunity to learn more about the building, the trails, and the ecology of this precious gift PVAS received from CraftWorks at Cool Spring one year ago. We hope to see you there!

What: Saw-Whet Owl Banding Station Field Trip

Where: Meet at the Shop and Save (formerly Food Lion) parking lot in Hedgesville  (147 Roaring Lion Dr. Hedgesville)

    When: Saturday, November 4, 2016

    Time: 6:00 PM - 10:oo PM

    Cost: Free

Join Bob Dean at his Saw-Whet Owl Banding Station for his annual Banding Field Trip.

Sign up for this wonderful opportunity to see first hand how local birding expert, Bob Dean, catches, bands and releases Saw-Whet Owls.

The group will meet at the Shop and Save (formerly Food Lion) parking lot in Hedgesville on Thursday, November 4 at 6:00 PM. The group will then travel about 10 minutes to the owl banding station. Bob will discuss the car pooling, making it clear that if there is a need for someone to leave before 10:00 PM, they should drive or carpool with others who need to return early. There will be the option to stay later if owls are being caught and there is activity enough to warrant staying.

Participants should bring folding chairs and warm clothing for comfort as there will be a wait between net checks.

Due to the length of the evening, folks may want to bring along dinner or a snack and something to drink.

Registration is required and will be limited to 12 participants.

This event will be canceled in the event of foul weather. The owls will not be flying in wet or windy conditions.

For more information, please contact Krista Hawley at adultprograms@potomacaudubon.org or 703-303-1026.
