The Potomac Valley Audubon Society will continue the 'Advanced Birding' sessions this fall starting with raptors.

This workshop will be composed of one classroom session and three field trips conducted by one or more of the following instructors: Wil Hershberger, Bob Dean and Matt Orsie. The goal of the workshop is to take current birders to the next level of knowledge and identification within this unique group of birds.

Applicants must be PVAS "Birding 101" graduates or have commensurate birding experience to participate. The Advanced Birding series will continue with other groups and families going forward over the course of the next few years. A goal during the field trips will be to have the participants doing the bulk of the identifications so others in the group will all learn collectively.

The main topics to be covered in this workshop are:
  • Migration
  • Identification in flight
  • Behavior
  • Distribution and population trends
  • Conservation goals
The classroom session will be held at the National
Conservation Training Center north of Shepherdstown, WV on Thursday September 11th at 7:00 pm.

The three field trips will be run at various locations within a two hour drive of the WV Eastern Panhandle on a flexible schedule (depending on weather) on the following weekends: September 20, October 12 & November 1.

Class size will be limited to 12 participants and registration is required. The course is open to people of all ages with the required experience although persons under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

*All but $50 of the registration fees will be refunded up to one week before the program beings. PVAS reserves the right to cancel this workshop due to unforeseen issues. In the case, a full refund will be given.
