PVMN Re-Cert Hours

Are you interested in learning more about how you can, on your own, determine a good deal about stream health? Do you want to learn about aquatic macro invertebrates (water canaries)?

Join Sandy Brown, Environmental Educator at Alice Ferguson Foundation, certified Master Naturalist and PVAS Watershed Instructor, as she searches for benthic macroinvertebrates in Antietam Creek!

Aquatic macroinvertebrates are small animals living among stones, logs, sediments and aquatic plants on the bottom of streams, rivers and lakes. They play an important role in fresh water ecosystems and are widely used as indicators of pollution when testing for water quality (hence, their nickname of "water canaries.")

Workshop participants will learn how to identify these organisms and how they indicate water quality.

Participants will work in shallow water near the Newcomer House on the eastern edge of Antietam National Battlefield. This is a family friendly event and children are very welcome if accompanied by an adult.

Participation in this workshop, which is limited to the first 30 participants, will provide 2 elective hours toward Master Naturalist certification or re-certification.

Registration is required. Please dress for the weather and be prepared to stand in ankle deep water. Bring along drinking water, sunscreen and insect repellent.

Meet at the Newcomer House in Antietam National Battlefield. 18422 Shepherdstown Pike, Keedysville, MD 21756. Drive through Sharpsburg and it is a half mile up on the left (directly across the street from the barn they have been restoring for the past 6 months).

Please contact Krista Hawley at adultprograms@potomacaudubon.org or 703-303-1026 with any questions you may have.

*all fees are non-refundable
