Spring is to far off to stay indoors so bundle up and join us for this family friendly event.  Let's start off the New Year by seeing how we can take better care of our environment by recycling.

The tour will be led by Clint Hogbin, who chairs the Berkeley County Solid Waste Authority, and Harmony Dressler, who is the District 2 coordinator for the WV Division of Environmental Protection's Youth Environmental Program.

We will explore the recycling center by walking the entire center and learning commodity by commodity how material is accepted and where it is marketed.  Participants will get a first-hand look at how recycling centers work, and lean about current recycling issues.

We will also hear about the Berkeley County ground breaking event of Entsorga, the first Biological Treatment Plant being built in the US which converts waste to solid fuel.

Immediately following the tour Harmony Dressler, DEP, will briefly tell us about the Youth Environmental Program and the REAP programs (Adopt-A-Highway/Spot, WV Make It Shine, Operation Wildflower, Pollution Prevention and Open Dumps, and the Recycling Grants), and what’s happening with each program locally.

Berkeley County has long been a leader in promoting recycling, and it already operates one of the most comprehensive voluntary drop-off and curbside recycling programs in the region.

The event is free and everyone is welcome, however preregistration is required.

Meet at 1:00 pm at the recycling center.

Participants should wear sturdy footwear and dress appropriately for prevailing weather conditions.

Snow or heavy rain may cancel this event.
